Day 4 Departure Day
Salvador is known as Brazil's capital of happiness due to its easygoing inhabitants and countless popular outdoor parties, including its street carnival. Salvador is noted for its cuisine, music and architecture, and its metropolitan area is the wealthiest in the Northeastern region of the country.
Salvador was the first capital of Brazil and remained so until 1763, when it was succeeded by Rio de Janeiro and then Brasília in 1960. Salvador is the 3rd most populous city In Brazil, after São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Over 80% of the population is in part descended from Black African slaves, who were mainly Yoruba speakers from Nigeria, Ghana, Togo and Benin. The African influence in many of the cultural aspects of the city makes it the center of Afro- Brazilian culture. Salvador's historical and cultural aspects were inherited by the miscegenation of ethnic groups such as Native-Indians, Africans, and Europeans. This mixture is seen in the religion, cuisine, cultural manifestations and customs of Bahia's people.
The historical centre of Salvador, the “Pelourinho” or simply “Pelô”, is renowned for its Portuguese colonial architecture with historical monuments dating from the 17th through the 19th centuries and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.
